Work

Majlis al-Jinn, for the Oman National Museum

Majlis al-Jinn is a vast cave chamber in Oman, reached by a 140m free descent on a rope. We planned the shoot in VR from a LiDAR scan of the cave, then filmed inside it for the Oman National Museum.

A 360 frame inside Majlis al-Jinn: a climber in a helmet hangs on a rope below the shaft of daylight from the entrance

The cave

Majlis al-Jinn lies in the Selma Plateau, about 100km south-east of Muscat. Its chamber is about 310 metres by 225 metres, under a domed ceiling 120 metres high, and the way in is from above: a 140m free descent on a rope.

What we did

We made a LiDAR scan of the cave and brought it into Unreal Engine as a VR app. Exploring the chamber in VR before the descent let us plan the crew’s movements, where the equipment would go and where to film from.

The crew also trained for the descent: to go down the 140m rope safely, and to have the stamina to climb back up it. Then we filmed in the cave, for a video in the museum’s immersive experience.
