The films
ScreenSkills commissioned both films to show people how film and TV work behind the camera; both are stereoscopic 360, for VR headsets and YouTube. In First Day: On Set, made with The Third Floor and shot at Pinewood Studios before lockdown, the viewer is a runner on a working sound stage, shown round by the third assistant director.
First Day: In Post (2022), produced by Inkydink Pictures and directed by Jo Southwell, moves on to a post-production house. The tech ops supervisor shows the viewer the central technical area, edit, VFX, grade, Foley and dubbing, and a twelve-piece orchestra recording a soundtrack. On-screen graphics name each department, and the viewer chooses which to visit.
What we did
Ben Huss was the immersive specialist on First Day: In Post, working with Inkydink Pictures and The Third Floor. Before that, in the spring of 2019, Sununu Hernandez of our team filmed First Day: On Set in 360 3D.
What happened next
First Day: On Set won the Production Guild of Great Britain’s Innovation Award for a Production Team in November 2020. The jury chair, Alex Boden, said it “uses technology in a compelling way to unravel the mystery of production”. Its 360 version had 139,655 views on YouTube by September 2026.
